HONG KONG — Shares soared 8% today on the Hong Kong market amid signs that a civil war in China is increasingly unlikely.
The blue-chip Hang Seng Index jumped 171.83 points to close at 2,440.21, marking its fourth consecutive gain since last Monday’s 225 point plunge on news of the violence against pro-democracy protesters in Beijing.
The index has now recovered three-fifths of that day’s 582-point fall.
