An Antelope Valley man was being held on suspicion of possession and cultivation of marijuana today after authorities found more than 10,000 marijuana plants growing in the yard behind his home, the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department reported.
John McDonald, 50, was being held in lieu of $150,000 bail after the plants, weighing nearly 1,000 pounds, were seized Sunday at his home in the 20400 block of Avenue R in a rural area near Palmdale, Deputy Dan Cox said. Cox said 30 pounds of dried and packaged marijuana also was found in a trailer on the property.
The marijuana field was spotted by a sheriff’s helicopter pilot on a routine patrol over the area.
Deputies kept samples of the plants as evidence and burned the rest Sunday afternoon. They did not estimate the value of the illegal crop.
