NATION : 3 U.S. Warships to Visit Soviet Port
WASHINGTON — Three U.S. warships will visit the Soviet Black Sea port of Sevastopol next month as part of an expanding program of U.S.-Soviet military cooperation, the Pentagon announced today.
The visits are the first of their kind in 14 years, U.S. and Soviet officials have said.
Pentagon spokesman Pete Williams said the U.S. warships will be in the Soviet port Aug. 4-6. The contingent will be led by the flagship for the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, the cruiser Belknap, based in Gaeta, Italy.
The Belknap will be accompanied by an Aegis cruiser, the Thomas S. Gates, based in Norfolk, Va., and the frigate Kauffman, based in Newport, R.I.
On July 21-25, three Soviet warships will visit Norfolk, home of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet.
