Composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein is in Warsaw, Poland, to participate in a concert tonight commemorating the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II. Bernstein, 71, will recite lines from W. H. Auden’s poem, “September 1, 1939,” at the start of the program. At a news conference, Bernstein said, “Today, like 30 years ago when I was here for the first time, I feel deeply moved by the visit to Poland.” This trip, he added, is especially meaningful in the wake of the continuing political transition toward democracy. Part of the Bernstein family came from a village very near present-day Poland, he said. Among others scheduled to participate in tonight’s concert are actress Liv Ullmann, soprano Barbara Hendricks and contemporary Polish composer Krzystof Penderecki.
