Chile’s Roberto Rojas was banned from organized soccer for life because he faked an injury during his country’s World Cup qualifying match against Brazil last month in Rio de Janeiro.

The International Football Federation announced that Rojas, Chile’s captain, would be ineligible for all international and club matches. Chile was fined $31,000.

According to the federation, Rojas admitted he was not hit by a flare thrown from the Maracana Stadium crowd of 151,000 in the second half of the Sept. 3 match, an incident that prompted the Chileans to walk off the field while trailing, 1-0. The game was called, and Brazil was later awarded a 2-0 victory.
