Dallas Green has withdrawn as a candidate for the Cincinnati Reds’ manager’s job, setting back the club’s effort to complete a shake-up prompted by its 1989 collapse.
Green, former manager of the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies and an ex-Chicago Cub executive, notified General Manager Bob Quinn of the decision, citing personal and business reasons.
The Reds finished fifth in the National League West last season with a 75-87 record.
Tommy Helms, who finished the 1989 season as interim manager after Pete Rose’s banishment from baseball Aug. 24, is still a candidate for the job. Others include former Cleveland managers Doc Edwards and Pat Corrales, and ex-Houston manager Hal Lanier.
