CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Rules on Ownership of Assault Guns Hit

Rules that would preclude most people outside law enforcement from getting permits to own assault weapons drew fire in Sacramento from gun lobbyists and weapons collectors. Under laws passed by the Legislature earlier this year, the purchase of any of 56 banned weapons is prohibited without special permits. The ban was instituted after a deranged drifter with an AK-47 assault rifle killed five children and injured 30 other people in Stockton.
