Region : Water Hearing Site Changed
The state Senate Committee on Agriculture and Water Resources has changed the location of its Friday hearing on the Azusa landfill to Sacramento because of difficulty in getting state senators to travel to the San Gabriel Valley.
The hearing had been scheduled in El Monte. Instead, a committee spokesman said, it will be in Room 113 of the state Capitol, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
In a controversial decision Oct. 1, the state Water Resources Control Board voted 3-2 to approve the landfill’s request to expand. Some local and regional water officials and environmentalists had complained that the dump threatens the ground-water supply for 1 million people in the San Gabriel Valley.
Although the committee does not have the power to overturn the board’s decision, it wants to hear testimony from supporters and opponents on how the landfill expansion would affect the ground water.
