Italian Cardinal Ernesto Civardi, 83, who was consecrated as bishop in 1967 and elevated to cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1979. His death brings the number of Roman Catholic cardinals to 149. Of those, 114 are under the age of 80 and thus eligible to participate in a conclave for the election of a new Pope. In Rome on Tuesday of unannounced causes.
