Anti-Apartheid Leader to Speak

The Rev. Allan Boesak, president of the 70-million-member World Alliance of Reformed Churches and a prominent leader in the South African movement against apartheid, will make his first Orange County speaking engagement at 4 p.m. Friday.

He will lecture at Chapman College’s Waltmar Theatre, 333 N. Glassell St., Orange. His appearance is presented as the college’s annual Griset Lecture.

Boesak is the founder of the multiracial United Democratic Front, the force behind many nonviolent, civil movements in protest of South African apartheid.

Boesak, an ordained minister of the Dutch Reformed Church since 1968, attended Cape Town’s University of the Western Cape, the Netherlands’ Theological Academy of Kampen and New York’s Union Theological Seminary.

Rabbi Aaron M. Wise, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Adat Ari in North Hollywood, will speak on “Affirming Jewish Values” Sunday at Temple Beth Sholom, 2625 N. Tustin Ave., Santa Ana.

The Rev. Charles Sommer will conduct a Healing Circle Support Group on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 at a private residence.

Leonardo Sidnez, chairman of the Jan. 9th Panamanian Committee, will offer a video presentation and talk about the invasion of Panama on Sunday at the Unitarian Church of Orange County, 1120 W. Santa Ana St., Santa Ana.

“The Jan. 9th Panamanian Committee is a group that continues to struggle for the right of self-determination and national sovereignty over the entire Panamanian territory,” Sidnez said.
