GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : La Quinta Edges Rancho Alamitos in Overtime

GARDEN GROVE — La Quinta High School’s girls’ basketball team defeated Rancho Alamitos, 62-60, in overtime Friday.
La Quinta’s key player, Amy Jalewalia, fouled out for the first time this season with 2:11 to go in regulation. Although La Quinta (11-2, 2-0)had held 11-point leads throughout the second half, Jalewalia’s absence allowed Rancho Alamitos (8-2, 1-1) to tie the score, 60-60, on free throws with less than 10 seconds left.
But Lucy Huang made the only basket in the three-minute overtime, to give La Quinta the victory.
“I don’t know how we did it without Amy,” Coach Kevin Kiernan said. “It was guts.
“It says a lot for how we play,” he said, “but I don’t ever want to do it again.” Jalewalia still managed to lead the team with 35 points.
In other Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:
Kennedy 57, Bolsa Grande 42--Michelle Harris had 21 points to lead visiting Kennedy (5-7, 1-1). Valerie Ruiz and Lynly Matsumoto each had 12 for Kennedy. Lihn Quach had 17 points for Bolsa Grande. Kennedy led, 18-3, after the first quarter and 31-10 at halftime.
Garden Grove 36, Los Amigos 29--Melanie Dear scored 14 points to lead host Garden Grove (6-4, 2-0).
In nonleague play:
University 53, Woodbridge 36--Denise Gandara had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead the host Trojans. (10-3). Woodbridge led, 21-19, at halftime but was outscored, 18-8, in the third quarter.
Fullerton 56, La Mirada 45--Sommer McLean scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds for host Fullerton (8-4).
