For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen:

* Check out the ornamental cousins of two winter vegetables by asking for flowering kale or cabbage. Their intensely colored rosettes will brighten winter flower beds.

* Look up two popular flowering shrubs in the garden center: azaleas and camellias.

* Put in your first planting of gladiolus this month and follow it up with additional plantings at 15-day intervals to extend their blooming period.

* For a delightful ground cover in the shadier part of your lawn, don’t forget to plant forget-me-nots.
