Car Theft Warning System Under Way in 6 Area Cities

Lakewood — Operation CAR, which stands for Cars at Risk, is under way in six area cities where the auto theft rate has risen about 30% in two years.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies are putting CAR warning notices on automobiles that they find unlocked in the cities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood and Paramount. “Your car could have become a statistic,” says the 5-by-7-inch notice that is appearing on windshields.
Sgt. Edwin Hill of the Crime Prevention Department at the Lakewood sheriff’s station said that between June and November of 1989, 1,284 cars were reported stolen. In the same five-month period in 1987, he said, there were only 892 reported car thefts.
