Parent May Become Sprint: United Telecommunications will ask its shareholders in April to adopt the name of the Kansas City company’s long-distance subsidiary as “vastly more recognizable” than that of its parent, said spokesman Jerry Cosley. The name change would come as United Telecom prepares to buy the last 19.9% stake in the unit from GTE, its former equal partner in U S Sprint, whose full name would would remain U S Sprint Communications Corp. United expects to acquire the rest of GTE’s investment by early next year, Cosley said.
