SAN CLEMENTE : $25,000 Grants OKd for Clinic, Shelter

Grants totaling $25,000 for two local nonprofit organizations have been approved by the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

The Community Block Development Grant funds will be used to support prenatal care for poor women and their babies and for a half-way house in San Clemente, according to a spokesman for Supervisor Thomas F. Riley.

“These are services that are badly needed in South County,” said Mark Goodman, executive assistant to the supervisor.

A $15,000 grant was awarded to the Episcopal Services Alliance to support the Anchor House, a transitional shelter for low-income, homeless families in San Clemente.

Also approved by the supervisors was a $10,000 award to the Laguna Beach Community Clinic. The clinic will use the money to expand prenatal care services for poor pregnant women and their babies.

Services will be provided to about 20 low-income women living in San Clemente.

“Prenatal care isn’t exactly profitable,” said Ron Woelfle, president of the clinic’s board of directors, “so whenever we can get some source of funds like this, it helps us continue to provide prenatal services.”
