President Bush telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir today to offer his condolences over the “horrendous attack” on Israeli tourists by two masked men in Egypt, a White House spokesman said.

“This horrible act of terrorism should be condemned by civilized people everywhere,” said press secretary Marlin Fitzwater.

Nine Israeli tourists and two Egyptian guards were killed Sunday when masked assailants opened fire on a bus en route to Cairo.

“President Bush called Prime Minister Shamir of Israel to offer his condolences on the death of Israeli tourists this weekend,” Fitzwater said.

“This terrible incident is an obvious attempt by the enemies of peace to thwart efforts at reconciliation and dialogue.”

Masked gunmen sprayed the bus with bullets on a highway 37 miles east of Cairo.

Officials in Jerusalem today said 17 Israelis and a Swede were injured in the attack.
