THE SIDELINES : Jackson Urges Boycott to Go On
LONDON — Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson today urged an unofficial English cricket team to end its demonstration-dogged tour of South Africa and return home.
“I hope that all athletes will see themselves as men and women of dignity and not provide incentives for that system by entertaining people in the context of apartheid,” Jackson said.
“We all look forward to the day when everybody can play together, vote together and trade together.”
Jackson was asked about the tour during a news conference at the House of Commons.
He said the international sports boycott of South Africa should be maintained because apartheid continues despite reforms announced Friday by the white-led government.
