Rolling Hills 91, Torrance 76--What was billed as a shoot-out between three-point specialists Steve Clover of Rolling Hills and Rick Robison of Torrance instead turned into a showcase for Rolling Hills center Roger Hendrix.
The 6-foot-6 junior scored a career-high 39 points, including 27 in the second half, to rally the host Titans to a Bay League victory. Hendrix also led Rolling Hills with 10 rebounds.
The Titans improved to 14-11 overall and 6-7 in league play to break a fourth-place tie with Torrance. The Tartars slipped to 10-12 and 5-8.
Torrance led by as many as 14 points in the first half and was ahead early in the third quarter until Hendrix took control. Attacking from close range, he scored 16 points in the third quarter to give the Titans a 62-59 lead.
Hendrix then accounted for 11 of his team’s first 18 points of the fourth quarter to help make it 80-72 with 2:40 left.
Junior guard Chad Heitzler added 27 points for Rolling Hills, including four three-point shots. Clover scored only 12, but he set the Southern Section record for most three-pointers in a season with two to give him 126, breaking the previous mark of 124 held by Tracy Murray of Glendora.
Robison led Torrance with 30 points, but scored only four in the fourth quarter. He had three three-pointers.
