Beverly Hills : Election Day Change OKd
Gov. George Deukmejian has signed a bill that will allow the city to change the date of its City Council election to avoid conflicting with the Jewish festival of Passover.
The bill was authored by state Sen. Herschel Rosenthal (D-Los Angeles), in response to complaints from constituents and city officials that the normal Election Day, April 10, was the first day of Passover.
Beverly Hills City Clerk Jean M. Ushijima said her office was unable to obtain the use of enough polling places or the services of sufficient workers for the original election date.
Council members said they would take official action at their next meeting to change the election date to April 3.
