Compromise on Westside Parking Crush Advances
A compromise measure designed to alleviate the parking crush on and near Melrose Avenue and yet satisfy merchants has won approval from the transportation committee of the Los Angeles City Council.
The plan would allow for two-hour unrestricted parking from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on streets abutting Melrose between Alta Vista Boulevard and Gardner Street. At night, parking on the east side of the side streets would be restricted to residents with permits, while parking on the west side of those streets would be unrestricted.
Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky, who is not a member of the committee but who spent more than a year working with merchants and neighborhood groups in crafting the compromise, hailed the measure as “a unique solution to a very complicated problem.”
The committee voted unanimously 3 to 0 to send the plan to the full council for approval.
