TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Wins Easily at Milan
John McEnroe breezed past Italian Davis Cup player Paolo Cane, 6-4, 6-1, Thursday night to earn a quarterfinal berth in an indoor tournament at Milan, Italy.
McEnroe, who had received a warning during a previous match in Milan for disputing line calls, was unusually calm.
“He’s always polite when he wins easily,” said Cane, who gave Italy a 3-2 Davis Cup victory over Sweden by defeating Mats Wilander in the singles final Monday.
In other second-round matches, Ivan Lendl defeated Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1; unseeded Americans Pete Sampras and Jim Courier won in straight sets, and Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia upset third-seeded Aaron Krickstein, 6-2, 6-3.
Joey Rive of West Palm Beach, Fla., ranked No. 142 in the world, advanced to the quarterfinals of a $250,000 tournament at San Francisco by beating 70th-ranked Lawson Duncan of Asheville, N.C., 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Earlier in the week, Rive defeated Kevin Curren.
