GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Foothill Defeats Santa Ana to Take Century League Title
Sandi Rasmussen scored 13 points to lead Foothill High School to a 49-20 victory over Santa Ana and the Century League girls’ basketball title Thursday at Foothill.
Heli Syrjanen added 12 for Foothill (14-9, 9-1 in league). Foothill had to win Thursday to stay one game ahead of second-place Santa Ana Valley, which defeated Villa Park.
In other Century League games:
Santa Ana Valley 65, Villa Park 60--Francesca Rumps scored 19 points as Santa Ana Valley (14-8, 9-2) clinched second place. Evonne Caouette had 18 points for Villa Park (5-12, 4-6).
In the Empire League:
Esperanza 52, Katella 38--Jennifer Harney scored 21 points for Esperanza (9-1 in league play).
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 74, Valencia 41--Brea-Olinda earned its 48th consecutive victory and finished the regular season 26-0. Aimee McDaniel had 20 points, Jody Anton had 16 points, Tammy Blackburn 14 points and Jinelle Williams 13 points for Brea-Olinda, which is 10-0 in league. Holly Keeton had 18 points for Valencia (14-10, 8-2).
Magnolia 47, Anaheim 27--Yolanda Hearvey and Joyce Pe’a scored 13 each and Joya Walach had 11 for visiting Magnolia (5-15, 3-7).
In the Olympic League:
Santa Margarita 50, Capistrano Valley Christian 40--Kristen Mulligan scored 26 to lead visiting Santa Margarita. Carrie Shannon scored 22 for Capistrano Valley Christian.
Orange Lutheran 60, Whitney 52--Becky Pearson had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Renee Wright had 12 points to lead host Orange Lutheran (6-14, 5-9).
In the Orange League:
Savanna 50, Western 30--Stacey Aliff had 19 points and Jackie Boxley had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead visiting Savanna (15-9, 6-4), which played without Carrie Frederick, who has the flu.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Orange 72, Laguna Hills 42--Nicole Champion had 27 points to lead host Orange (16-6, 8-2). Ailin Perez had 13 points, Ginnie Hall had 12 and Laurie Sallinger had 11 for Orange. Stephanie Szallay had 15 points to lead Laguna Hills (5-15, 2-8).
Woodbridge 46, Laguna Beach 27--Nicole Schwartz scored 10 as visiting Woodbridge (21-4, 10-4) finished the league season undefeated. Laguna Beach was 1-9 in league play.
Costa Mesa 63, Trabuco Hills 57 (OT)--The teams were tied, 53-53, at the end of regulation, but Olivia DiCamilli scored nine of Costa Mesa’s 10 points in overtime. She had a game-high 32 for Costa Mesa (12-11, 6-4).
In the Sea View League:
University 62, Newport Harbor 44--Denise Gandara had 44 points and 14 rebounds for University (18-5, 8-2). Stacey Giem had 25 for host Newport Harbor.
Tustin 63, Saddleback 56--Christine Garner scored 22 and Jennifer Coombs added 18 for visiting Tustin (21-5, 10-0). Janet Chacon scored 22 for Saddleback (9-13, 4-6).
Estancia 62, Corona del Mar 34--Melody Oearre scored 14 points, had eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals for third-place Estancia.
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 43, Bishop Amat 33--Melissa McDonald had 14 points, eight steals and six rebounds to lead visiting Mater Dei (10-13, 7-3).
