COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Stops Basketball Losing Streak
Roger Middleton scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds to help Chapman College end a four-game losing streak with a 66-60 victory at Cal State Northridge Saturday.
Chris Martin had 17 points and Frantz Reyes added 16 for Chapman (11-12 overall, 3-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.).
Kendell McDaniels scored 19 points for Northridge (10-13, 5-5).
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:
Southern California College 97, Christ College Irvine 81--Terry Scruggs had 21 points and Jeff Bickmore 18 to lead visiting Southern California College (19-7). Albert Gay had 18 points and Keith Rogers 17 points and 10 rebounds for Christ College Irvine (11-17).
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:
Cal State Northridge 55, Chapman 53--Kim Takayama led visiting Chapman (17-7 5-4) with 13 points. Northridge is 10-14, 7-2.
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:
Christ College Irvine 85, Southern California College 70--Christ College Irvine (4-19, 1-6) forced 32 SCC (11-12) turnovers and Genevieve Graff scored 33 points and had 10 steals for Christ College Irvine.
In the Big West/Pacific 10 Softball Tournament:
Cal State Fullerton lost twice on the first day of the tournament at Fullerton. Oregon’s Julie Cavanaugh hit a three-run home run in the third inning of the Titans’ 4-3 loss. Fullerton scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
In their second game, the Titans (2-2) were held to two hits in a 1-0 loss to UCLA. The Bruins and Cal Poly Pomona each won twice. The six-team tournament continues today.
In nonconference softball:
Christ College Irvine 2-13, UC Riverside 1-7--Host Christ College Irvine (2-0) won its season-opening games as Darcey Schipporeit had five hits and scored five runs in the second game and Tracy Schultz drove in both runs in the first game.
Southern College College 19-18, College of Notre Dame (San Francisco) 0-5--Joyce LaPointe went three for four with two RBIs in the first game and four for five with three RBIs in the second game to lead visiting SCC (2-2).
In nonconference baseball:
Arizona 9, Cal State Fullerton 8--Arizona’s Troy Bradford, who hit a two-run double to tie the score at 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth inning, went to third on a sacrifice fly and scored the winning run on Billy Owens’ pinch-hit single. Joey Martinez got the victory and Chris Robinson was the loser. Fullerton is 3-4.
UCLA 6, UC Irvine 4--Irvine led, 3-1, but UCLA scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Al Rodriguez had two hits and one RBI and Fred Combs scored twice for Irvine (2-5). UCLA is 7-1.
Chapman 3, The Master’s College 1--Jason Rolish hit a home run in the second inning, his third of the year, to lead host Chapman (5-3).
