Channel Islands Gains Major Decision : Wrestling: Raiders win another Marmonte title; Westlake’s Billy Hunter dominates among individuals.
Channel Islands High and Westlake’s Billy Hunter concluded their respective season-long wrestling assaults in the Marmonte League on Saturday in the championship meet.
Hunter, a senior who was second in the state last year, needed less than three minutes to pin his three opponents and win his second consecutive 175-pound title. Hunter, who is 29-0 with 25 pins and has given up only three points, was named the most outstanding upper-weights wrestler, his fifth award in as many opportunities this season.
Channel Islands, meanwhile, had clinched its third team title in four years even before the championships, in which the Raiders were represented by six wrestlers. Only Heda Kuwata (138) finished first, but depth carried the team.
Channel Islands, which finished the regular season 6-0 in league dual matches, won the tournament with 134 points. Camarillo was second with 124 and Newbury Park was third with 111.
In addition to Kuwata, Channel Islands was led by Vuthy Keo (98), T. R. Merickel (112), Robin Song (119), David Gallegos (126) and Victor Cardenas (145) with second-place finishes.
Camarillo was led by Tim Kelley (165) and Shawn Saylors (132), each of whom pinned his opponent in placing first. Mike Schioppi (154) and Mark McAleer (175) were second. John Nufplot (126), Jeff McWhorter (138), and Eric Bateman (heavyweight) each finished third for the Scorpions.
Newbury Park’s Tom Lobianco (119) was named most outstanding lower-weights wrestler. Lobianco beat Song, 11-10, in a thrilling match that Song pushed into overtime. His last-second escape in the third period tied the score, 6-6. Steve Lee (105), Waide Caddin (145), and Jeff Jay (heavyweight) added titles. Jeff Fisher (132) was second.
Thousand Oaks, which was third with 109 1/2 points, was led by the Bernie Bradshaw (98) and Brad Hutchins (126), both of whom placed first. Nick Ochoa (heavyweight) was second and Mark McGarvey (105), Chris Jermain (165) and Matt Buchanan (175) both finished third.
Westlake had first-place finishes from Farzin Daneshnia (112), Neal Mason (154) and David Schumm (191). Daneshnia, who won the 105-pound title last year, improved to 29-2. Schumm successfully defended his title and is 29-3. Mason, the 145-pound champion last year, is 31-2.
Royal’s Eric Landegger (105), David Jukes (138), Richard Tucker (165) and Jeremy Giancanelli (191) each finished second to lead the Highlanders to sixth place. Emilio Cruz (154) finished third to lead Simi Valley, which was last.
