Hundreds Attend Rites for Armenian Prelate

JERUSALEM — Hundreds of mourners flocked Sunday to the funeral of the head of the Armenian church in Jerusalem and the Holy Land who died Feb. 1 at the age of 80.
Yeghishe Derderian had served as Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem and leader of the 10,000-strong Armenian community in Israel, the West Bank and Jordan since 1960. He died of a heart attack.
Archbishop Torkom Monukian, head of the Armenian church based in New York, was elected temporary patriarch Friday. A permanent successor will be chosen within the next month.
