Buying antiques is a lot like gourmet cooking--it’s easier than many people think.
According to Country Home magazine, common sense, knowledge and a little practice is all that is needed.
For best results, follow this advice from Stephen Roedler, director of the Manhattan Arts and Antiques Center, the oldest and largest antiques collective in the country.
* Specialize. Concentrate on a single period or genre.
* Study. Take courses and visit museums to learn what factors make antiques most valuable.
* Socialize. Join historical societies or clubs to meet like-minded collectors. Get to know dealers in the specialty area whose tastes are admired.
* Browse. Get an overview of prices and selection before buying.
* Buy quality. Obtain the best items, even it if means buying less.
