Seven sheriff’s deputies from the City of Industry substation, credited with helping to nearly triple the number of drunk-driving arrests last year in the area, were recognized for their efforts last week by the Los Angeles County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The number of arrests in the 51-square-mile region--which covers the City of Industry, La Puente, Hacienda Heights, Bassett, Valinda and La Habra Heights--rose from 453 in 1988 to 1,243 in 1989, said Sgt. Bob Wilson.

The number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities, however, was only reduced from five in 1988 to four in 1989.

“Still, just to save one life was worth it,” Wilson said.

Three of the deputies--Douglas Williams, Russell McElroy and Edward Corrette--combined for 290 of the arrests during their regular patrol duties.

Four other deputies--Wilynn Clinkscales, Edward Godfrey, George Marin and Richard Morgan--were responsible for 128 arrests as part of a special drunk-driving task force that was organized for three holiday weekends.

The deputies were awarded plaques Thursday by Anita Butler, MADD’s director of education.
