It’s a mistake to interpret “Married . . . With Children” literally. The Bundys are not intended to be viewed as role models for the American family. They merely represent truth about the unrefined side of human nature. The Bundys are you and me with all of our hidden resentments and secret fears exposed. This absurd family never hesitates to verbalize thoughts and feelings which most of us suppress. And the dismal outcome of each new social catastrophe fails to motivate any character to change. Yet I love the way the Bundys and their two insipid neighbors make fools of themselves. It grants me permission to pay hilarious homage to the fool that resides within us all.
