Apple Inc. to Pare 400 Jobs
Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO — Apple Computer Inc. today announced that it will cut its work force by 3%, eliminating 400 jobs because of sagging profits and falling sales.
The layoffs for Apple Computer --the world’s No. 2 personal computer maker with sales of $5.3 billion last year--become effective in two months, the company said.
Reductions will be made in the marketing and distribution departments of Apple’s domestic division and in personnel, finance and customer service divisions throughout the company.
About 280 of the jobs eliminated will be at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The company will continue hiring workers for research and development and for its domestic sales force.
