SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : No Parking Fee for Train Commuters
The City Council on Tuesday rejected a plan to impose a $2-a-day parking fee on Amtrak commuters who use the historic Capistrano Depot.
The $2 fee, which would have been the county’s first, was to have subsidized a new multilevel parking structure across the street from the depot. But council members said Tuesday that it was more important to encourage commuters to use the train than to pay for the parking garage.
The city’s Community Redevelopment Agency will still lease 131 commuter spaces from the developer of the private, 352-space parking lot across from the depot. The 131 spaces replace 99 free outside spaces in the depot lot now being switched to a three-hour parking limit.
