COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Santa Barbara Turning Tables Against Pierce
Pierce College’s domination of Santa Barbara City College in men’s tennis apparently is over.
For the second season in a row, the Vaqueros defeated Pierce, scoring a 7-2 win at Pierce on Tuesday. The Brahmas had defeated Santa Barbara in dual-meet competition every season since 1965 until last season.
Santa Barbara (2-0) swept Pierce (1-1) in all six singles matches.
“I never expected (No. 1 singles player) Al (Martinez) to lose,” Pierce Coach Paul Xanthos said. “As far as I am concerned, it was an upset.”
Martinez, the No. 2 ranked singles player in the state, was beaten by Santa Barbara’s John Fox, 6-4, 6-1, to set the tone. Martinez later teamed with Jason Gary to defeat Fox and Aaron Webster, 6-3, 7-6.
The doubles team of Jon Dutton and Chris Neuer defeated Shannon Peace and Bruce Osterman, 6-4, 6-4, for Pierce’s other point.
The Western State Conference match lasted an unusually long 4 hours 10 minutes.
“We couldn’t hang on to win the sets,” Xanthos said. “The match was over as soon as the fifth (singles match) was done.”

Mission 9, Cal Poly Pomona JV 0--Dain Turner and Shawn Fontenot each had two hits, and three Mission pitchers combined on a five-hitter to lead the Free Spirit in a nonconference game at Cal Poly Pomona.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL
UC Santa Barbara 1-1, Cal State Northridge 0-0--The Cal State Northridge offensive drought continued as the Lady Matadors wasted a pair of superior pitching performances by Debbie Dickmann and De Dow.
Northridge (1-7) has not scored in its past four games.
In the first game, Dickmann (1-3) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked one. Santa Barbara scored the winning run on an error in the fifth inning.
In the second game, which lasted nine innings, Dow (0-2) threw a five-hitter, struck out one and walked three. In the bottom of the ninth, Santa Barbara’s leadoff batter received a base on balls, was sacrificed to second, took third on a base hit and scored on an infield error. Santa Barbara improved to 8-1.
Canyons 3, Fullerton 1--Debbie Rendall went three for three with two RBIs to lead Canyons (3-2) to a nonconference victory over visiting Fullerton.
Canyons scored its runs in the sixth inning. Christine Plasch, Kelly Kepplinger and Angie Gorski singled, loading the bases.
