COLLEGE ROUNDUP : DeChavez Paces UCI Past San Diego in Baseball
Osmar DeChavez hit a two-run home run in the second inning and drove in another run in the fourth to help UC Irvine a 4-2 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference baseball game at at San Diego.
San Diego scored twice in the eighth on Rick Doane’s double. Irvine added a run in the ninth when Jon Skaggs hit a sacrifice fly.
Steve May (1-2) pitched seven innings and gave up six hits and Joe Sewell held San Diego hitless in two innings for the save.
Irvine is 6-6. San Diego is 4-6.
Loyola Marymount 12, Fullerton 10--Trailing 10-9 in the eighth inning, Loyola scored three runs to win at home. Tim Williams went three for five with a home run and five runs batted in for Loyola. Darryl Scott (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings for the victory. Rich Faulks (0-1) was the loser. Kevin Farlow hit a solo home run for the Titans (6-5). Loyola is 8-5.
Chapman 2, Christ College Irvine 1--Pinch-runner Mark Landeros scored from third on a single by Torri Sweet in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie at Hart Park in Orange.
Sweet scored Chapman’s first run in the third inning. He singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored when Jason Rolish singled.
Christ College Irvine’s only run, which came in the fourth, was unearned.
Collin Klein (2-0) pitched the seventh inning to earn the victory for the Panthers (7-5).
In Big West Conference women’s tennis:
Cal State Fullerton 8, Cal State Long Beach 1--Carolin Sporer won, 0-6, 6-0, 6-0, at No. singles and Roseann Alva and Kelli Moore won, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles for visiting Fullerton (5-5, 2-3).
In nonconference women’s tennis:
USC 8, UC Irvine 1--Only the doubles team of Erin Abe and Jennifer Mazgedian won for the injury depleated Anteaters (3-8) who were forced to default a singles match against the Trojans, who are ranked sixth in the nation.
In Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. men’s play:
San Diego State 3, UC Irvine--Steve Florentine had a school-record 29 kills but the Anteaters lost, 15-13, 13-15, 15-13, 8-15, 15-12, at San Diego. Irvine dropped to 1-8 and 0-8 in the conference. San Diego State is San Diego State 9-6 and 2-4.
