HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Valhalla Works Overtime, Beats USDHS in Quarterfinal

It took two 15-minute sudden-death periods and four penalty kicks before Valhalla could get by USDHS, 3-2, in a 2-A boys soccer quarterfinal at Valhalla.
It was the Norsemen’s 77th consecutive game without a loss.
“We’re not going to get a more challenging one than that,” said George Logan, Valhalla coach.
Actually, Valhalla took a 2-0 lead into halftime, thanks to an unassisted goal by Jason Florence and another goal from Jim May, who took a long pass from Toby Taitano before beating the goalie.
The momentum changed, Logan said, when Mark Spice was “dumped” by a USDHS player and had to leave the game.
“It was really a beautiful football block,” Logan said, “but it was in the wrong sport.”
Spice, a key midfielder for Valhalla, suffered a dislocated shoulder, but should be ready for Wednesday’s semifinal, Logan said.
In other boys’ 2-A quarterfinals:
Mission Bay 2, San Pasqual 1--Mission Bay scored 30 seconds into the game when Adel Afkarian, a junior forward, converted a pass from Socrates Scatolini.
Midway through the second half, Jeff Susi scored on a penalty kick to put Mission Bay (13-3-4) up 2-0.
The Buccaneers will take on Valhalla in Wednesday’s semifinals.
Carlsbad 1, Madison 0--Carlsbad broke the 0-0 tie with just four minutes remaining and now heads to the semifinals to face San Diego.
San Diego 4, San Marcos 2--Hector Castillo scored three goals for San Diego. Manny Rodriguez had a goal and two assists for San Diego.
GIRLS’ 3-A QUARTERFINALS
Bonita Vista 2, Poway 0--With the victory, Bonita Vista matched the national record it set last year of 16 consecutive shutouts. The record began with the Barons 1-0 victory over San Pasqual in the semifinals of San Pasqual’s Christmas tournament.
Against Poway, Camille Guerra scored from 30 yards out at the 3:45 mark, and five minutes later, freshman Darci Comer took a low crossing pass set up by freshman Kristen Nicita for the second score.
Bonita Vista improved to 25-1-2. Poway finished at 14-7-3.
The Barons will meet Mt. Carmel, a 2-1 victor over Granite Hills, in the semifinals.
San Dieguito 1, Rancho Buena Vista 0--Maggie Merritt scored two minutes into the game and the San Dieguito defense took over from there. The shutout was San Dieguito’s 14th.
Torrey Pines 6, Patrick Henry 1--Danielle Napoli scored four goals and Christy Peters scored another on a penalty kick for Torrey Pines (22-0-4). Torrey Pines will play San Dieguito Tuesday at San Pasqual (5 p.m.) in the semifinals.
