Plan to Demolish Historic Theater Gets Judge’s OK
A Superior Court judge has ruled that the city of Whittier has successfully completed an extensive study needed to pave the way for demolition of the historic Whittier Theater, which was severly damaged in the Oct. 1, 1987, earthquake.
But Judge John Zebrowski put demolition on hold for two weeks to allow local conservationists an opportunity to appeal the decision. Whittier Conservancy members have said that they will fight the ruling, which could stave off the wrecking ball for months.
The city tried to demolish the old film palace shortly after the quake, claiming that it was a public hazard. But a lawyer for the Whittier Conservancy argued in court that the city needed to conduct an extensive environmental impact report before leveling the theater. The judge agreed and issued a restraining order.
Zebrowski said Monday that the restraining order will be lifted March 12 if no one appeals.
