Rust Hired as Coach of Patriots
Rod Rust, who spent 14 seasons as an NFL assistant, was hired as coach of the New England Patriots Tuesday, a day after the team fired Raymond Berry.
Rust, who was Pittsburgh’s defensive coordinator last season, was the Patriots’ defensive coordinator from 1983-87, working under Berry part of that time. Rust, 61, becomes the NFL’s second-oldest coach. The Minnesota Vikings’ Jerry Burns is 63.
The Patriots finished 5-11 last season and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
