Schwartz Heads Speedway Field at Long Beach

Bobby Schwartz, the defending U.S. speedway motorcycle champion, heads a field of 20 riders scheduled to compete in the opening race of the Spring Series at 8 tonight at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.
Schwartz, of Costa Mesa, has won the series the past three years. He is expected to challenged by Billy Hamill of Monrovia and veteran overseas riders Ricky Miller, Lance King and Gary Hicks.
The event features five-man scratch heat races.
The series resumes March 9 at the Orange County Fairgrounds. The season opener of weekly racing at the Costa Mesa track is scheduled March 30.
