Oscar Mayer to Shut Vernon Plant: Lunch meat giant Oscar Mayer Foods Corp. will close its Vernon processing plant at the end of September, laying off 537 workers, company officials said. The company, which purchased the plant in 1951, blamed the closure on high operating costs. Based in Madison, Wis., Oscar Mayer operates 21 manufacturing plants nationwide.
