World IN BRIEF : COLOMBIA : Centrist Declares Victory in Primary

Centrist candidate Cesar Gaviria declared victory in Colombia’s presidential primary, and all five of his rivals conceded defeat. No official results were released, but an exit poll showed Gaviria, 43, with a wide lead. He is expected to carry the ruling Liberal Party’s banner against Conservative Rodrigo Lloreda in the May presidential election. The primary, in which thousands of federal, state and local officials were also elected, followed a night of political violence that left six people dead. Gaviria was a campaign aide to former presidential candidate Sen. Luis Carlos Galan, who was killed by drug traffickers in August, 1989.
