Crisis Over Lithuanian Independence
Gorbachev is waging a psychological war against Lithuania. Bush is pretending historical amnesia toward the same. Stalin is smiling in his grave. But John Kennedy, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower are trembling in shame.
The point is that time has passed for President Bush to do and to say nothing. Strong words of support for democracy in Lithuania are needed from the President of the United States. Nicaragua, Panama, South Africa--and, yes, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia--demand the moral and political support of the U.S. Watching events only is not good enough.
