Heart-Valve Lawsuit: A Canadian woman is suing Irvine-based Shiley Inc., claiming that the company’s heart valve malfunctioned after it was implanted in her chest, forcing her to undergo an emergency bypass operation.
The suit, filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court by Deborah Philp of Ontario, Canada, seeks unspecified damages.
Last month, a Washington-based consumer group, Public Citizen, filed a suit against Shiley, claiming that the company failed to warn more than 80,000 patients worldwide that the valve could malfunction. Shiley, which no longer makes the valve, has denied any wrongdoing.
