Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. of Camarillo, which sells computer chips made with gallium arsenide instead of silicon, said it completed its first profitable quarter in its six-year history.
Lou Tomasetta, Vitesse’s president and chief executive officer, said Vitesse recorded a net profit of about $20,000 in the first quarter that ended March 31 on $3.5 million in revenues. Tomasetta said commercial computer customers accounted for 50% of sales, with the balance coming from telecommunications, aerospace and test equipment customers. He added that Vitesse, which is privately owned, saw strong sales growth overseas, particularly in Japan.
