About 1,000 gay rights demonstrators staged a noisy but generally peaceful protest outside Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston as 11 priests were ordained inside. Church spokesman John Walsh said the ceremonies, conducted by Cardinal Bernard Law, proceeded without interruption. A coalition of gay-rights groups organized the demonstration to oppose “Cardinal Law’s interference in public policy, as well as his opposition to AIDS education,” a statement said. Police said one person, a lone counterdemonstrator, was arrested.
