School Wins First Place With ‘Harmony’ Video

J.H. McGaugh Elementary School in Los Alamitos captured first place in the elementary school video division with its production of “Harmony” at the California Media Festival.

Students involved in the video were Will Corder, Scott Davis, Wendy Ginsburg, Heather Green, Rob Barisoff, Todd Cutuli and Rollie Wing.

The production, which used a sound track made by the school’s fifth-grade chorus, offered a statement on how students want the world to be in the future.

The school also won overall best elementary school entry for grades 4-6. Teacher Lois Cohn is director of the school’s media center where the video was made.

Heather Marks, a graduate of Foothill High School in Santa Ana, was named winner of the annual $2,000 David Shanbrom Memorial Scholarship Award given to a scholar-athlete.

A swimmer for four years, she will attend Stanford University. The award is named for Shanbrom, a former football player who was killed in a 1986 traffic accident.

Robert E. Maples of Irvine, director of investor relations for Costa Mesa-based Archive Corp., a tape-drive manufacturer, was honored with a Silver Anvil award by the Public Relations Society of America.

The award, given annually by PRSA, was in recognition of excellence for the company’s investor-relations program.

The award “is the equivalent to public relations as the Oscar is to achievements in motion pictures,” Maples said.

Manuel Cervantes of El Toro, a truck driver for Dewey’s Rubbish Service, was awarded a commendation by the city of Newport Beach for putting out a fire with his fire extinguisher. Cervantes noticed the blaze in a city truck that had pulled to the side of the road.

Newport Beach resident Robert P. Warmington was awarded the Orange County Boy Scout William H. Spurgeon Award, presented for Warmington’s activities with the Boy Scout Explorers program. Spurgeon created the exploring program in Orange County.
