Let Them Eat Macs

Regarding your story about the McDonald’s brouhaha in La Jolla (“Fast-Food Outlet’s Benches Stir McStrife in La Jolla,” July 15): After reflecting upon the story, I came to the conclusion that La Jolla represents a microcosm of the United States as it enters the ‘90s--an elitist, trivial, self-centered society. I find it laughable that the La Jollans mentioned in the article were so offended by the hoi polloi “slobbering” over Big Macs in front of their art galleries.
If the views of the people quoted in your article are indicative of those held by the average La Jolla business person, I sincerely wish the rabble who pig out on McSnacks will spend their tourist dollars elsewhere.
