ACLU Sues Over 2 Live Crew Sales Ban: The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit Monday challenging a sales ban on “As Nasty as They Wanna Be,” the controversial album from rap group 2 Live Crew. The suit, filed in Richland County Circuit Court in South Carolina, asks for a prohibition on the arrests for the sale of the album. It also asks that a judge decide whether the album is obscene. Solicitor Jim Anders, who in June threatened to prosecute those selling the album, is named as the suit’s defendant. When he announced the ban on the album, Anders invited those “willing to risk three to five years (in jail), go ahead and sell it.” Three record stores have joined the ACLU as plaintiffs, said Steve Bates, executive director for the ACLU’s South Carolina chapter.
