WORLD : E. German Politico Pushed Out

EAST BERLIN — East Germany’s top political party relieved its general secretary of his duties today after a news magazine said he had worked for the former Communist secret police for 15 years.
Martin Kirchner, chief of the Christian Democratic Union of Prime Minister Lothar de Maiziere, was told to step aside pending an investigation of the accusations, said party Deputy Chairman Horst Korbella.
Kirchner was pushed aside shortly after the West German magazine Stern reported in its latest edition that he worked for the notorious secret police, the Stasi, as a paid informant for 15 years.
