KENNEBUNKPORT, Me. — President Bush’s uncle, Dr. John Walker, died early Thursday morning of complications from an aneurysm. He died at Southern Maine Medical Center about 10 miles from Bush’s summer home.
A White House spokeswoman said Walker, 81, the brother of Bush’s 89-year-old mother, died about 20 minutes before the President arrived in a final attempt to see him.
Walker was a retired surgeon and investment banker who switched careers from medicine to finance after being stricken with polio in 1950.
Bush went to the hospital before meeting at his seaside estate with Jordan’s King Hussein.
