WORLD IN BRIEF : NORTH KOREA : Japan Visitor Makes Vow on Reparations

Shin Kanemaru, a former deputy prime minister of Japan, told North Korean leaders in Pyongyang that he will stake his political life on getting approval of reparations for Japan’s long colonial rule of Korea, even without establishing diplomatic relations. The pledge put Kanemaru, an influential leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, in conflict with the Japanese Foreign Ministry, which has said reparations can be taken up only in the course of negotiating diplomatic recognition.
