A high school football game between Torrance and Palos Verdes at Torrance Stadium was called with 4:44 left in the fourth quarter Thursday night when Palos Verdes defensive end Andrew Miller suffered a neck injury and was taken by paramedics to Little Company of Mary Hospital.
Miller was listed as “awake, alert and stable,” according to a spokesperson at the Torrance hospital. An emergency room doctor said that Miller had no apparent neurological damage.
Torrance, which was leading, 17-0, was declared the winner. Officials from both schools agreed to call the game after a 20-minute delay when Miller was being attended to on the field.
The game was also delayed at the start when the official sideline doctor was absent.
Miller, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior, was talking with paramedics and moving his arms before being taken to the hospital.
Palos Verdes Principal Kelly Johnson said that he suggested calling off the game and that Torrance Principal Joe Rogers accepted the proposal.
Johnson said that Miller was being treated by a neurosurgeon and by Palos Verdes team physician John O’Hara, an orthopedist.
“(Miller’s) parents have met with Dr. O’Hara, and all signs are positive,” Johnson said. “(Miller) has full movement, and his (injury) isn’t life-threatening.”
