SOUTHWEST ROUNDUP : Rice Has the Lead Until Houston Wins It in End

Roman Anderson kicked a 32-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining as No. 13 Houston had to come from behind to beat Rice, 24-22, in a Southwest Conference game Saturday night at Houston.

Houston’s David Klingler completed touchdown passes of 78 and 56 yards to Patrick Cooper, the last with 2:31 left in the game.

But he threw two first-half interceptions as the Cougars fell behind 22-7 in the third quarter.

Cooper’s 56-yard catch pulled the Cougars to within one point. But Klingler’s incomplete conversion attempt left the Cougars trailing.

Then, with time running out, Klingler completed passes of 17 yards to Marcus Grant and 14 yards to Kody Smith to set up Anderson’s game-winning kick.

TCU 42, SMU 21--Quarterback Leon Clay accounted for five touchdowns as he rallied Texas Christian’s “comeback kids” to their third straight come-from-behind victory at Dallas.

The Horned Frogs (3-1) scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat the Mustangs (1-2) in the SWC opener for both teams.

Clay, who completed 19 of 33 passes for 252 yards, ran for two touchdowns and passed for three.

TCU defeated Missouri and Oklahoma State in the last two weeks on fourth quarter rallies engineered by Clay.

The Frogs erased deficits three times to beat SMU (1-2).

SMU took a 21-14 lead on Mike Romo’s four-yard touchdown pass to Mike Bowen, but the Frogs then scored three touchdowns in a span of 65 seconds.

Kelly Blackwell caught touchdown passes of 15 and 12 yards and defensive end Dan Dougherty provided the clinching blow when he returned a tipped pass 38 yards for a touchdown.

Baylor 21, Texas Tech 15--Redshirt freshman quarterback J.J. Joe led the Bears (2-2, 1-0) over the Red Raiders (1-3, 0-2) at Lubbock, Tex.

Joe completed four of seven passes for 77 yards and rushed for 29 more after replacing Brad Goebel, who left the game with a broken right wrist early in second quarter. Goebel missed Baylor’s first two games with a knee injury.

Redshirt freshman Robert Hall of Texas Tech completed 25 of 47 for 328 yards and one touchdown and ran for another. But he was intercepted three times.

Hall started in relief of injured starter Jamie Gill.

No. 23 Arkansas 31, Colorado State 20--Quarterback Quinn Grovey’s 27-yard touchdown pass play to Tracy Caldwell broke a 17-17 tie in the third quarter as the Razorbacks (2-1) won at Little Rock.

The Rams (3-2) had a fourth-and-one at the Arkansas 10 early in the fourth quarter, but settled for a field goal after an illegal procedure penalty.

In the second quarter, the Rams had failed on third and fourth down from the Arkansas one. Colorado State Coach Earle Bruce claimed fullback Tood Yert scored on third down, and said he would contact at American Fotball Coaches Assn. about neutral officiating crews working nonconference games. Paul MacRenato lost a couple of inches on fourth down.

Grovey’s three-yard scoring pass to Kirk Botkin completed an 83-yard drive with 4:52 remaining and put Arkansas ahead by 11.

The scoring pass was the third of the game for Arkansas, which scored on its first two possessions for a 14-0 lead. But the Rams pulled even at 17-17 after Mike Brown’s 32-yard field goal with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

The Razorbacks faced third and seven from the 29 when Grovey went back to pass. Under pressure, he headed right, spotted the first-down marker and just made it before stepping out of bounds. Aaron Jackson cut back at the line of scrimmage for a 21-yard gain and then a personal foul penalty moved the ball to the Ram 27, setting up Caldwell’s touchdown.
